A Beginner's Guide
UPGRADES
Every week, on Sunday, you will be presented with the opportunity to select upgrades. These are essential to ensuring that your roads are constructed efficiently and to minimize traffic. The main action in this game is to connect enough houses to destinations to cover demand. You will have a choice between 20-30 road tiles, or 10-15 road tiles and an upgrade. Before you pick, assess your infrastructure and your stash and make the best choice.
Road Management
Bridges: You can use these to connect houses and destinations separated by rivers, lakes, or inlets.
Tunnels:
You can use these to connect houses to destinations when there is a mountain in-between them.
Mountains are only features in some cities and if there are no mountains,
then tunnels will not be offered as an upgrade.
*Both bridges and tunnels
require road tiles to build. Every length requires one road tile, the same way each stretch of road does, so keep this in mind while you're building; the shorter the distance, the better.
Motorways:
You can use these to connect houses and destinations that are far apart. Cars can drive faster on motorways and above other roads to get to their destination faster.
*Upgrades do not function like road tiles. Even though they require road tiles to build, once you connect one end of a bridge or tunnel to a road,
that counts as one bridge or tunnel. For example, if you have 3, your count will reduce to 2.
Traffic Management
Roundabouts:
When cars pass one another on a road, they slow down, which can create traffic.
You can use roundabout to redirect cars at an intersection or road corner with heavy back and forth so they can maintain their speed and get to their destinations quickly.
BEFORE
AFTER
Traffic lights: You can use these to control traffic on roads where lots of cars are on both lanes at once or at 3 or 4-way intersections. When cars are approaching from opposite lanes, the traffic light will automatically turn red for one side, forcing those cars to stop while the other side goes. Then, once they pass, the light automatically turns green so the rest can go. This prevents cars from stopping in the middle of entrances/exits or from getting stuck in their houses because too much traffic is passing in front of them.
Can you see the difference they make with traffic at this intersection?
